ChatGPT and Gemini disagree about your funeral home
ChatGPT builds its recommendation from Foursquare, Bing, and the open web. Gemini builds its own from Google's Business Profiles, Maps, and reviews. The gap between their answers about your funeral home isn't noise — it's a free audit of your documentation.
Ask ChatGPT who to call after a death in your town. Then ask Gemini the same question, in the same words. Read the two answers side by side. Often the lists barely overlap — a funeral home that leads one answer is missing from the other, and a detail right in one is wrong in the second. Neither machine is broken. They are reading different internets.
Two assistants, two internets
Families now put the question to both. 45% of consumers used AI tools for local business recommendations this year, up from 6% the year before — already the third most-used discovery channel, behind only Google and Facebook. Among US adults, 44% use ChatGPT and 24% use Gemini — so the family arranging a funeral this weekend may be holding either one, and a home that plans for only one of them is planning for half the room.
One fact reorganizes the whole subject: neither assistant reads the rankings page. When Ahrefs ran 15,000 prompts through ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and Perplexity, only 12% of the pages AI cited appeared in Google’s top ten for the same query — and ChatGPT and Gemini each overlapped that top ten just 6 to 9%. Your Google rank is not your AI rank. Each assistant splits the question into its own sub-queries, runs them against its own pipes, and assembles a fresh answer from what its pipes can verify. The pipes are the story.
Where ChatGPT gets its answer about you
ChatGPT’s pipes, as documented in mid-2026: its own search crawler, two named partners, a places database — and, reportedly, a quiet line into Google. OpenAI’s live help page names exactly two search partners, Bing and Shopify, and its crawler documentation describes OAI-SearchBot, the bot that decides whether your website can appear in ChatGPT search answers at all. For the local block — the map and the list of businesses a family actually sees — Foursquare announced a partnership with OpenAI the day ChatGPT’s maps launched in December 2024, and one Spanish-market analysis of fifty local prompts found 60 to 70% of the top-position local results coming from Foursquare’s data. Read that twice: the directory that most decides how ChatGPT lists your funeral home is one most funeral homes have never claimed.
And the pipes have moved under everyone’s feet. In early 2025, one Seer Interactive analysis found 87% of ChatGPT’s citations matching Bing’s top organic results. By a different yardstick a few months later, the analytics firm Profound put ChatGPT’s alignment with Bing at 26% in April 2025 and falling to 8% by July, while alignment with Google’s results rose from 12% to 33% — and The Information reported OpenAI quietly pulling Google results through a scraping service, which OpenAI has never confirmed. What is on the record, under oath at the Google antitrust trial: OpenAI’s head of product for ChatGPT testified the company is years away from answering most queries on its own index — and that Google refused to sell it search access. The honest summary for an owner: ChatGPT’s stack is a hybrid, it shifts by the quarter, and Bing stays on the label — the one named search partner that matters for finding a local business.
One caution, because owners get this backwards: some funeral homes blocked AI bots wholesale when the crawlers first appeared. Blocking GPTBot only opts your site out of model training. Blocking OAI-SearchBot removes you from ChatGPT’s search answers — the place your families are asking. Two different switches; check which ones your website flipped.
Where Gemini gets its answer about you
Gemini’s pipes need less detective work, because Google documents them: answers are grounded on Google Search, and — decisive for a local business — on Maps data covering more than 250 million places, explicitly including user reviews. When a family asks Gemini about funeral homes nearby, the answer reads like a conversational version of the map pack, assembled from the Business Profile, the reviews, and whatever the open web corroborates. (The map pack itself is still its own game, and still the bigger door — the paragraph answer is the one growing.)
Which means the Gemini lane runs through assets you already manage. The Business Profile that is the closest thing to an AI trust signal a funeral home controls is also Gemini’s grounding data; the reviews families leave are source material the model quotes from. And your existing search work transfers here in a way it never will to ChatGPT: Semrush found Google’s AI Mode overlapping Google’s classic top ten at 54% by domain — against the 6 to 9% Ahrefs measured for ChatGPT in the same-query test above. The years a funeral home has spent earning its Google presence compound in this lane. Since June 10, 2026, an owner can even connect the Business Profile directly to Gemini and work it conversationally. The same assistant that recommends homes to families will now tell you what your profile is missing.
The caution on this side is quieter but real: a thin review base is a thin grounding base. A profile with four reviews, the newest from 2024, gives the model four sentences to build your reputation from — and silence where the next question would be answered.
Same town, different names
So why do the two answers disagree so often? Because the divergence is structural. The citation sets barely overlap across engines, and each engine’s reading diet churns: Semrush tracked more than 100 million AI citations through late 2025 and watched Reddit swing from roughly 60% of ChatGPT’s answers to about 10% in a matter of weeks, while Google’s AI Mode stayed comparatively balanced, with a visible preference for Google’s own properties. Visibility in one engine tells you almost nothing about the other, or even about the same engine next month.
For a funeral home, that disagreement is not a problem to resent. It is a diagnostic to read. Each assistant can only name what its pipes can verify — so the gap between their two answers about you maps, lane by lane, where your documentation is thin. Named by Gemini but absent from ChatGPT: your Google presence is carrying you, and the Foursquare-Bing-open-web lane is empty. Named by ChatGPT but not Gemini: the reverse — usually a starved Business Profile or a stale review base. Wrong facts in either answer: the source data in that lane is wrong, and a grieving family may be reading those wrong hours tonight. Ten minutes with two apps produces the most specific marketing audit a funeral home can get, and it costs nothing.
The stakes of leaving the gap unread are already measured in this industry. When 5W ran more than 65 consumer prompts about end-of-life services through ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews in early 2026, it estimated that roughly 88% of the country’s independent funeral homes carry effectively no AI citation share in their own metro; Service Corporation International, the largest corporate group, holds an estimated 16 to 18% by itself. When the machines cannot verify the independent down the street, the vacuum gets filled the same way in both lanes: with the national brand.
Which lane do you work first?
The Gemini lane — if you have to choose. You already own its raw material: the Business Profile, the review base, the website Google has indexed for years. The transfer from classic local search is real, and Google’s grounded answers reach the most total eyes — the company says AI Overviews alone pass 2.5 billion users a month. Everything your funeral home has done for the map pack is already partial credit here.
But the ChatGPT lane barely costs anything, and most of it is one-time. Claim and correct the Foursquare listing — ten minutes, free, and not a directory a funeral home thinks to claim. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, which since February 2026 runs an AI Performance report showing where AI-generated answers cite you — it covers Copilot and Bing’s own answers rather than ChatGPT by name, but it’s the closest thing to a dashboard this lane has. Make sure nothing in your robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot. And let freshness work for you: Microsoft’s own guidance says freshness signals directly influence how quickly your updates show up in AI-generated answers, recommending IndexNow — the push protocol that tells Bing’s index about new pages the moment they exist.
What serves both lanes at once is the thing neither Google nor OpenAI controls: pages that answer a family’s questions plainly, with sources, in your own voice. The one peer-reviewed study of generative-engine optimization found that adding cited sources, statistics, and quotable lines lifted a page’s AI visibility by as much as 40% — and lifted fifth-ranked underdog pages 115% while the incumbent above them lost ground. The machines read for the answer, not the leaderboard — the month-one documentation work that decides whether you get named at all is the same work in both lanes.
The two machines will keep disagreeing about your funeral home; the pipes are different and both are still moving. The steady thing is what they both read: the record you keep in public. So run the audit tonight — the same two questions, both apps, ten minutes. Where the answers agree, you’re documented. Where they disagree, one lane just told you exactly what it’s missing — the most specific to-do list anyone will write your funeral home this year, and the only one that arrives free.
